Thousand Oaks is a relatively young city, having been officially incorporated in 1964. However, the area has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The Chumash, a Native American tribe, lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. They had a complex society and were skilled in various arts such as basket weaving and rock painting. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Spanish explorers and Missionaries arrived in the area, and later, in the mid-19th century, American settlers began to arrive, many of them drawn by the prospect of gold and land. The area became known for its ranching and farming, and by the early 20th century, several large ranches had been established in the region. Today, Thousand Oaks is known for its high standard of living, good schools, and natural beauty. The city has also been successful in preserving much of its open spaces, so the city has a good balance of urban and natural areas.
